Authorities make arrest in stabbing death of 48-year-old Veronica Gonçalves
Authorities have made an arrest in the stabbing death of a Massachusetts woman.
Just after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Brockton Police received a 911 call for a report of a woman bleeding in the driveway at 342 Crescent Street in Brockton. Upon arrival, Brockton Police and emergency medical personnel located the female victim on the ground with obvious trauma to the head. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Veronica Goncalves.
Preliminarily, this appears to have been a targeted attack and not a random act of violence.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner accepted jurisdiction of the case and will determine the cause and manner of death.
According to officials, Goncalves had visible wounds to her head and face and was declared deceased at the scene.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says that 56-year-old Joao Correia is in custody and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
Family stated that Goncalves 2-year-old grandchild witnessed the attack in a nearby vehicle and that the attacker was in a relationship with Goncalves.
The investigation is ongoing.
