Kitten dies after Rhode Island Police Department raised money for medical care

Police and citizens tried to save a kitten this week, however, officials received sad news today.

According to East Greenwich Police, a male kitten, approximately 8-12 weeks old, was struck by a vehicle on Division Street near Howland Road on Tuesday at approximately 1:00 pm.

A caring passerby stopped and retrieved the kitten from the roadway and contacted East Greenwich Animal Control. The kitten was transported to North Kingstown Animal Hospital where he received some medication for his pain and X-rays. The X-rays confirmed a badly broken rear leg in in need of surgery to repair.

Due to the East Greenwich Police Department not receiving funding for circumstances such as these and the Animal Control department relying on donations to help treat injured or abandoned cats and dogs, the department began raising funds.

Despite the efforts of all involved, officers received some bad news this morning.

The ACO received a call at 8:00 a.m. notifying the department that the kitten had passed away overnight. It is believed he sustained some internal injuries.

EGPD stated that the generous donations will pay for the care and shelter provided to the kitten by the staff and doctors at North Kingstown Animal Hospital and the full remainder will be donated to the Exeter Animal Shelter.
