UPDATE: Seekonk man shoots self after police chase on Route 6
Police are investigating an incident where a suspect shot himself after a pursuit Thursday.
According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 3:11 p.m. a Massachusetts State Police Trooper, who is assigned to the State Police-Dartmouth Barracks, was monitoring a scanner in his cruiser and learned that Swansea Police had received a 911 call from a motorist who reported that the suspect was displaying a firearm from the window of his vehicle.
The Trooper then observed that suspect vehicle, a 2005 Mercedes ML with a Rhode Island registration, on Route 6 westbound. After the suspect failed to stop, the Trooper pursued with several Swansea cruisers behind him.
The suspect passed through Rehoboth and eventually stopped at approximately 3:14 p.m. on Route 6 westbound (1825 Fall River Ave.) in Seekonk. The suspect then suffered a self-inflicted life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The suspect is a 38-year-old Seekonk man.
The facts and circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County, Swansea Police and Seekonk Police.
