Authorities responded to a man who was in a sinking boat off of Fall River Country Club Thursday and made a stormy rescue.

According to scanner transmissions, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a man was on the phone with dispatch as his dinghy was sinking until it eventually sunk.

Fall River Harbormasters Paul Borges and Bob Smith responded in the Harbormaster Safe Boat along with the Somerset Fire boat.

The victim luckily was equipped with a life jacket and used his phone as a flashlight to help rescuers locate him as he floated in the water.

According to Smith, it was windy and the water was very rough as conditions got dark which made visibility poor.

“Just as we got on scene, a police officer on land spotted the man in the water. He was retrieved from the water and brought aboard the Somerset Fire boat. We retrieved his sinking deflated dinghy.”

The rescued boater was transported to a local hospital.

The following video, courtesy of Smith, can give you an indication of the difficult visibility along with glimpses of the rough surf.

Returning to port

This was a call tonight about a man in the water as his dinghy deflated and sank. This video is to give non-boaters an idea of what it's like to be out here in the off-season with rough weather and very low visibility. Every once in awhile you will see the waves splashing over the bow.
