Tiverton Police warn of recent scams hitting area residents

Tiverton Police have received several complaints about scams going around.

The TPD put out the following warning:

“Good afternoon Tiverton. We have received several complaints from citizens getting calls from people claiming to be family members requiring “bail money” after being arrested. These calls are called “grandparent scams” and are an attempt to obtain credit card information or wire transfers of funds. The callers also attempt to mislead and intimidate victims by using the name of a relative or by saying, “it is your grandson and they only give me one call.” You should NEVER provide any personal or financial information over the telephone or cell phone.”

A word of advice is to “slow down” and determine if the situation is for real. “Verify the person’s identity by asking questions someone else couldn’t possibly answer,” and get off the phone and check with a family member or the person who supposedly called you.
