Bally’s Corp. has no plans to reopen the hotel next to its Tiverton casino, which has sat empty since 2020, company officials told state lawmakers this week.
During a meeting of the Permanent Joint Committee on State Lottery, Rep. Jay Edwards asked Craig Sculos, Bally’s senior vice president of Rhode Island regulatory relations, about the status of the structure adjacent to the casino. Sculos said the company’s property team continues to view reopening the hotel as not viable for the business.
“As of this point, there are no plans to reopen the facility, the hotel side of the facility,” Sculos said.
Edwards asked about the long-term use of the space. Sculos replied that it remains undecided. While converting it back to a hotel would be the easiest solution, internal discussions about turning it into office or co-working space have become less practical with more people working from home. He said there is currently no concrete plan.
“I think to a person, we’d all like to see the hotel come back, but we just can’t make the numbers work. Until then, it’ll just remain offline,” Sculos said.
Edwards noted that the Town of Tiverton is anxious to see the property put to use because property taxes are a key source of local revenue. He asked the company to keep exploring options so the space does not remain empty on the tax rolls. Sculos said he would carry that message back to the company.
The hotel, part of the Bally’s Tiverton Casino that opened in 2018, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and has not reopened. The casino itself continues to operate with slots, table games, and a sportsbook.
