While it is tragic when any child passes away, the phrase “only the good die young” epitomizes the remarkable life of a Massachusetts high school student who died recently.

According to an obituary, 17-year-old Desmond Baugh, a junior at Saint Sebastian’s School in Needham, was remembered as a kind, engaged, and community-minded young man who balanced academics, athletics, and service even while undergoing treatment for cancer.

A standout athlete and scholar, he maintained an A-average in honors-level courses and was selected for the National Honor Society. He competed on his school’s soccer team as well as with the IFA Soccer Club and other clubs, playing in tournaments in Spain in 2024 and Fleetwood, England in 2025 as part of a college identification program. Beyond soccer, he was an outstanding skier who also enjoyed golf, hiking, surfing, and other outdoor activities.

Desmond lived by mottos of seeking joy, loving God, working hard, and caring for others.

Service was central to his life. He volunteered often, including tutoring younger students through St. Sebastian’s partnerships with St. John Paul II School in Dorchester and the San Miguel School in Rhode Island. He supported Miracle League and served as a graduation photographer at The Cotting School. As an eighth grader at The Fessenden School, he organized a fundraiser for Athletes Unlimited and brought in a speaker on the value of giving. After witnessing the Maui wildfires in 2023, he created a fundraiser for the Pacific Whale Foundation. He also shared his story on WEEI during the Jimmy Fund Telethon and was working with his school on ways to support patients at the Jimmy Fund, even while receiving care there himself.

He found particular peace at Camp Belknap on Lake Winnipesaukee, where he was part of the Leaders corps and was honored as a Leader in Training the summer before his death. His medical teams at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber and Boston Children’s Hospital noted his kindness, respectful manner, and habit of looking out for other kids. He formed genuine connections with staff and earned many friends among those who cared for him.

Baugh’s funeral was held this morning.
