A local organization is helping make sure that Fall River area athletes are staying active playing the game they love, even in the evening.
Riptides Futbol Club recently helped restore the lighting system at Father Travassos Park, giving local soccer teams another place to train and play after dusk.
Riptides FC worked with Fall River parks director Darren Medeiros, the city’s Parks Division, and local contractors. The club said the lighting system had been out of service for more than 10 years.
“Father Travassos has deep roots in this city,” said Jeremy Messier, club president and a U.S. Navy veteran. “Bringing the lights back means more kids on the field, more parents who can make practice after work, and another home for soccer in Fall River on ground that already means something to this community.”
The club expects the additional evening field time to ease pressure on other fields shared by youth and adult teams, schools and community programs.
Medeiros stated that “Jeremy has been excellent to work with to restore Travassos field lights to the rotation to accommodate night play.”
Father Travassos Park has long hosted football, soccer and school athletic programs. Riptides FC also plans to hold youth soccer clinics at the park.
