Massachusetts State Rep Alan Silvia defends vote against late-term abortion bill on national news program
Massachusetts State Representative Alan Silvia, who was one of only a handful of Democrats who voted against legislation that removed limits on abortions after 24 weeks, appeared on a national news program to express his views Wednesday.
In comments regarding the bill in an appearance on the news network Newsmax, Silvia explained his consistent opposition, stating that he believes in protecting human life, including the life of the unborn.
He noted that society goes to extraordinary lengths to protect vulnerable life, citing efforts to save whales and stray animals, yet that same protection often disappears when it comes to an unborn child.

Silvia said he cannot support policies that expand abortion, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy. He emphasized that the issue is not one he takes lightly and that, while he understands deeply held views on both sides, he will continue to stand by his convictions and vote accordingly.
The bill advanced quickly through the legislature before being signed into law by Governor Maura Healey.
Silvia has received praise from national clergy and others for his stance.
