Cause identified after Fall River Fire Department extinguishes residential blaze that closes variety store; one civilian, two firefighters transported to hospital
The Fall River Fire Department extinguished a residential fire on Monday afternoon.
At approximately 3:15 p.m. Fall River Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported building fire at 1740 North Main Street.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the building and worked to bring the fire, which had spread into the walls and attic, under control.
It was reported to the Fire Department that construction workers renovating the building struck a power line with an aluminum gutter, potentially energizing the structure. Firefighters checked the building for electrical hazards; none were found.
Five occupants were displaced as a result of the fire, and the variety store on the ground floor, Marques Market, was closed.
One civilian was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two firefighters were also evaluated on scene for heat-related illness and transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
The Fall River Fire Department reminds residents and contractors performing renovation or
construction work to remain aware of overhead utility lines.
