Authorities are investigating a highway collision that led to serious injuries.

According to Rhode Island State Police, on Wednesday, at just after 4:45 p.m., Troopers from the Hope Valley Barracks, as well as members from the Exeter and West Greenwich Fire and Rescue Departments, responded to 911 calls reporting a rollover crash on Route 95 North in the Town of Exeter.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a BMW, driven by Calvin Kilgore, age 21, of Norwich, Connecticut, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and changed lanes from the left to the right to pass a slower-moving vehicle. Mr. Kilgore lost control of the BMW, and the vehicle entered the center median, striking the cable guardrail system. The BMW then rolled over several times and came to rest in the center median.

The rear seat passenger, a 20-year-old Massachusetts female, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Kilgore and a third occupant, a 23-year-old Connecticut man, sustained minor injuries. All three occupants were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

Kilgore was later arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Reckless Driving. Kilgore was held overnight at the Hope Valley Barracks and transported to Fourth Division District Court for arraignment this morning.

The crash remains under investigation by members of the Hope Valley Barracks and the Collision Reconstruction Unit.
