Man rushed to the hospital with critical injuries after car-pedestrian crash in Rhode Island
CRANSTON-Officers from the Cranston Police Department, Traffic Unit, are actively investigating a car-pedestrian crash that sent a pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries.
According to a release from the department, at approximately 7:55 p.m. on Friday, Cranston Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on Garfield Avenue between Texas Roadhouse and Route 10 South.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male pedestrian lying on the side of the roadway with a serious head laceration. He was alert and conscious at the scene. Cranston Rescue transported the individual to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Medical personnel later advised that the victim sustained a broken leg, a concussion, possible internal injuries, and a head laceration.
The driver, a juvenile male operating a 2009 Honda Accord, remained on scene, called 911, and rendered aid to the pedestrian. He was cooperative with investigators and provided a written statement.
Preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was walking northbound on Garfield Avenue while the vehicle was traveling southbound in the right-hand lane. The driver reported he did not see the pedestrian prior to impact. At this time, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor. Weather conditions at the time included rain, sleet, fog, and temperatures around 34 degrees, which may have affected visibility despite the presence of street lighting in the area.
The vehicle was towed to police headquarters for further examination and forensic data collection. The department’s Bureau of Criminal Identification responded to the scene to document and collect evidence. Surveillance video from a nearby business is being obtained as part of the ongoing investigation.
No charges have been filed at this time. The crash remains under active investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Cranston Police Department Traffic Unit.
