Former Durfee teacher and vice-principal who gave decades of service to the community has died
A lifelong Fall River resident who served the community for decades in multiple capacities has died.
According to an obituary, 91-year-old George Kelly passed away peacefully Tuesday at home.
Kelly’s career in education spanned decades at B.M.C. Durfee High School where he began as a dedicated history teacher. Over 36 years, he inspired countless students with his passion for learning and history. He became the Head of the Social Studies Department, and he ultimately served as Vice Principal until his retirement in 1996.
A proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, George served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was stationed in Okinawa.
Beyond the classroom and military service, George was deeply invested in his community and family. He was an active member of the Fall River Sports Program, where he managed and coached the “Bears” Little League team. He also held leadership roles including Chairperson of the Fall River Public Library Board of Trustees, Treasurer of the Fall River “Dollars for Scholars” Scholarship Committee, counselor for the High School GED Program, and Deputy Director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps and CETA programs.
A man of deep faith, George was heavily involved at Holy Name Parish, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, participating in the Cursillo movement, teaching faith formation classes, and contributing to the parish school and financial committees.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover Street, Fall River, MA. Please meet at church. Following mass, his burial will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery 2233 Robeson St, Fall River MA, with military honors.
