TIVERTON, RI – A local fire department made an ice rescue under frigid conditions.

According to the department, just before noon on Monday, the Tiverton Fire Department was contacted by a resident reporting a goose that appeared to be stuck on Stafford Pond in the ice and snow. The resident advised that the bird was alive, but it was unclear whether the bird was trapped or injured.

The Fire Department responded to evaluate the situation and determined the safest course of action. Given the location of the bird and the unstable ice conditions, crews recognized a significant risk that residents might attempt to rescue the goose on their own and potentially fall through the ice. To prevent injury to the public and address the situation safely, the department made the decision to conduct an ice rescue.

Two firefighters, wearing ice rescue suits and secured with safety ropes, cautiously proceeded onto the ice. During the operation, one firefighter broke through a weakened area of ice but was able to free himself and continue without injury. All safety measures functioned as intended.

The goose was successfully removed from the ice and snow and turned over to Tiverton Animal Control, who transported the bird for further care and evaluation.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

The Fire Department reminds residents that frozen ponds, lakes, and waterways can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Community members are urged not to venture onto ice-covered surfaces and to contact emergency services if an animal or person is in distress, rather than attempting a rescue themselves.
