New Bedford man sentenced to probation in Fall River Superior Court after stabbing outside of lounge

A New Bedford man was sentenced Tuesday in Fall River Superior Court concerning an altercation that took place outside of a local night spot and eatery.

According to New Bedford Guide, at approximately 2:00 a.m. on March 30, 2022, the New Bedford Police responded to reports of a stabbing on Acushnet Avenue in front of the Morna Lounge.

Upon arrival, police immediately established a perimeter closing traffic to a portion of Acushnet Avenue. One individual was found unconscious and lying in the middle of the street and at least two other individuals, who sustained stab wounds, were conscious and talking with paramedics and police.

The preliminary investigation suggested that there was a fight between two people before one drew a knife stabbing the other multiple times. This escalated matters, causing more people to beginning fighting. At least 3 individuals were transported to area hospitals, one with very serious injuries.

Higino Barros was charged with Aggravated Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Aggravated Assault, and Armed Assault To Murder.

According to court records, Barros was indicted in Fall River Superior Court in May of 2022 on Aggravated Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury and Armed Assault To Murder charges.

Court records also revealed that he was found guilty Tuesday on both charges and was sentenced to 5 years of probation.
