A Massachusetts man who paid the ultimate sacrifice has finally come home.

U.S. Army Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin who went missing from World War II came home on Saturday.

On July 30, 2025, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified the remains of Langevin, a Weymouth native.

“Langevin entered the Army from Massachusetts and served in E Company, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. On Nov. 6, 1944, he was reported missing in action while on a reconnaissance patrol southwest of Hürtgen, Germany. The exact circumstances of his loss are unknown, but the fighting in this area, part of the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, involved combat against fortified German positions, and difficult terrain that hampered visibility and movement. Following the end of hostilities, American Graves Registration Command personnel recovered a set of remains from the woods in the area where Langevin was lost. All identification efforts were unsuccessful, and in May 1949, the remains were declared unidentifiable and interred at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium. In June 2021, DPAA disinterred this set of remains and transferred it to the laboratory for analysis. Using modern forensic techniques, scientists then identified Langevin.”

According to an obituary, “Pvt. Langevin attended Weymouth Public Schools until the hardships of the Great Depression led him to support his family. He later became a grocer in Jackson Square. Pvt. Langevin married his wife Helen F. Langevin, and together they had a young daughter, Mary, who was just a toddler at the time of his deployment.”

Pvt. Langevin was 29 years old at the time of his disappearance.
