A local pet owner is grieving after his beloved dog was hit and killed on an area highway.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, authorities responded to I-195 West in Mattapoisett for a vehicle or vehicles that struck a dog.

The German Shepard was discovered in the middle of the road, deceased.

Christopher Currin, the owner of Chalk, described to Fall River Reporter what happened.

“He jumped the 4-foot fence at my parents as I got home and chased something through the woods.”

It is clear that Chalk was a special pet for Currin.

“He was almost 4 and very curious, loved chasing balls, and wild animals. Pure bred and adopted he was loved beyond belief. I am so heartbroken.”

If anyone has any information on who hit Chalk and/or how it happened, contact Mattapoisett Police at (508) 758-4141.
