Multiple people were injured on Thursday after a bus rolled over on the highway.

According to State Police, at approximately 12:20 p.m. today, members of the Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks, along with the Newport Police Department and Jamestown Police Department, responded to a rollover crash involving a RIPTA bus on Route 138 West at the end of the Newport Bridge.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the bus operator lost control of the vehicle at the end of the bridge. The left side of the bus struck the center guardrail before crossing both westbound travel lanes, colliding with a light pole and the guardrail on the right shoulder. The bus then rolled onto its left side.

The bus operator and two passengers were transported to Newport Hospital by Newport Fire and Rescue and Jamestown Fire and Rescue. A third passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks.
