A man who helped serve the Fall River area community for decades has died.

According to an obituary, Robert L. Horne, “Bob,” 70, of Swansea, passed away Wednesday at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence.

“After 25 years of dedicated service, Bob retired in 2019 as Executive Director of United Way of Greater Fall River. Prior to his tenure at United Way, he worked in the banking industry for 21 years, beginning as a teller and later serving as a loan officer at the former Fleet National Bank, now Bank of America.”

The United Way of Greater Fall River issued the following remembrance:

“After more than 14 years as a dedicated volunteer and board member, Bob became UWGFR’s Associate Director in 1994 and, just a year later, stepped into the role of Executive Director, a position he held with passion and purpose until his retirement on March 31, 2019.

“Bob’s leadership was defined by his deep commitment to service, his generosity of spirit, and his ability to bring people together for the common good. He had a quick wit and a legendary talent for creating slide shows that perfectly captured the heart of every campaign and event, always reminding us to find joy in the work we do.

“His dedication to Greater Fall River extended far beyond United Way, as he shared his time and talent with many civic organizations. For that, and for his unwavering belief in the power of community, we are forever grateful.”

Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea. Per Bob’s request, all services will be private. Contributions in his honor may be made to HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or to United Way of Greater Fall River, PO Box 2550, Fall River, MA 02722.
