A 44-year-old Weymouth woman was ordered held without bail Thursday after entering a not guilty plea to the murder of 56-year-old Christine Mello in Mello’s Weymouth home on Lake Street, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey.

Kelly Shaw, who had been staying with Mello, had previously pleaded not guilty on indictments for Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Larceny of property valued over $1,200, and misleading investigators. She was indicted on murder in the first degree by a Norfolk County Grand Jury this month.

Assistant District Attorney Lisa Beatty asked that Kelly, who has been in custody since her arrest in April, be held without bail on the murder charge; defense attorney Neil Madden assented. Judge Joseph Leighton ordered that the defendant be returned to court September 30, 2024 for pre-trial conference.

Shaw’s co-defendant in the larceny matters, John “Jack” Harper has not been indicted in the murder at this time although the matter remains under investigation.

Mello was reported missing before being found deceased and was remembered by friends as a nice person with a happy smile.

I am so sorry to hear this. Christine seemed to be an amazing woman with a kind soul. I unfortunately grew up with Kelly Shaw. She was not like this at all back in the day. However, over the years she was experiencing a lot of hardship that put her around not do great people. Kelly’s coconspirator plays a big role in the way Kelly has been and what has been done. This never should have happened and again I am so sorry for you the loss of your friend Christine. Praying the justice is served!
