43-year-old Providence man released on bail concerning crash that killed 23-year-old woman

A man has been released on bail concerning a fatal highway crash in Rhode Island.

According to State Police, on Wednesday, at approximately 3:45 p.m., Troopers from the Scituate Barracks responded to calls for a single motor vehicle crash on Route 295 South, south of Plainfield Pike, in the City of Cranston.

Witnesses to the crash stated that a Honda Accord, traveling in the high-speed lane, was forced off the roadway by another vehicle and entered the center median where it struck a tree.

The operator of the Honda, identified as 23-year-old Casey Bassignani of Johnston, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Cranston Rescue where she was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the second vehicle involved, identified as 43-year-old Juan Archila of Providence, was later located and taken into custody without incident. Archila was charged with Driving to Endanger – Death Resulting, held overnight and arraigned before a Justice of the Peace on Thursday morning. He was held on $50,000 surety/$5,000 cash bail at the ACI.

On Friday, Archila posted bail and did not issue a plea at arraignment. He is not supposed to drive and has a conference scheduled for February 27th.
