More details have come to light concerning a Massachusetts officer killed early Wednesday morning while on the job.

According to multiple law enforcement organizations, the officer killed in the line of duty early this morning attempting to assist a motorist on Route 146 in Uxbridge has been identified as 43-year-old Uxbridge Police Officer Stephen LaPorta.

In 2024, LaPorta became a full-time officer after previously serving the town as a full-time dispatcher and working part-time patrol shifts.

Those who knew LaPorta described him as smart, hardworking, and dedicated, but always knew how to smile and enjoy himself.

According to CBS News, LaPorta was on the northbound side of the highway at 12:40 a.m. when the crash took place and he died at the scene.

Today, Governor Maura Healey ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at all state buildings.

“I am heartbroken over the news of Officer Stephen LaPorta’s passing. He knew he was headed into a dangerous situation when he responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash, but like all of our officers do day in and day out, he put the public’s safety first – and he tragically made the ultimate sacrifice. My prayers are with his loved ones, the Uxbridge Police Department, and our brave law enforcement and public safety officials all across the state. I ask Massachusetts residents to take a moment today to reflect on the bravery of Officer LaPorta and thank members of law enforcement for all that they do to keep us safe.”

No word yet on what caused the collision or if charges are forthcoming. Icy road conditions may have played a factor.
