38-year-old woman charged after alleged hit-and-run crash injuries her, officer, in Newport

Newport, RI – A local woman is facing charges after a weekend crash injured both her and an officer.

According to police, on Sunday, at just after midnight, Newport Police Officer Adam Chiang was on a fixed traffic post on Eustis Avenue and Bliss Road monitoring traffic in the area. A vehicle driven by 38-year-old Erin Moitoza of Middletown allegedly collided with the rear of Officer Chiang’s marked police vehicle and then backed up and fled from the scene. Officer Chiang activated his emergency lights and siren and stopped her around the corner from the accident scene on Bliss Road. 

Moitoza was transported by the Newport Fire Department to the Newport Hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries. Officer Chiang was also treated and released at Newport Hospital for minor injuries

Moitoza was taken back to the Newport Police Station where she was charged with DUI and duty to stop for a motor vehicle accident.
