32-year-old Rhode Island woman accused of domestic stabbing, violating no contact order

Detectives are investigating after a domestic stabbing that occurred late Friday night.

According to police, at just before 11:30 p.m., Cranston Police responded to Mansion House, 111 Oaklawn Avenue, for a report of a stabbing. The caller reported that a male had been stabbed in the abdomen and that a vehicle was leaving the area.

As officers responded, they observed the suspect vehicle, a silver Jeep with a Florida registration, traveling in the area of Cranston Street and Cavalry Street. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop, and 32-year-old Markea Smith of Cranston, was taken into custody.

Officers responding to the apartment located a 28-year-old male suffering from a severe laceration to his abdomen. Cranston Fire transported the victim to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and is currently listed in stable condition.

During the investigation, detectives located evidence inside the apartment, including blood, clothing, and a mop and bucket containing blood. Investigators also recovered a large kitchen knife in the bathroom. The investigation indicated that someone had tried to clean parts of the apartment and remove evidence.

Smith was arrested and charged with Domestic-Felony Assault, Possession of a Knife During Commission of a Crime, Domestic Disorderly Conduct, and Domestic Violation of a No Contact Order.

Officers also arrested a second occupant of the suspect vehicle, 39-year-old Selena Martinez of North Providence, for her conduct at the scene of the traffic stop. She was charged with Threats to Public Officials, Simple Assault/Battery, Obstructing an Officer in the Execution of Duty, Resisting Legal or Illegal Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct.

Both suspects were held overnight at the Cranston Police Department pending arraignment this morning.

Detectives from the Cranston Police Department’s Detective Division and the Bureau of Criminal Identification responded to assist with the investigation, which remains active.
