29-year-old Fall River woman in critical condition, 39-year-old Taunton man stable, after early morning crash

Two people from Bristol County were injured in an early morning collision.
According to police, at about 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Ocean Drive at Hazard Road for the report of screeching tires and a loud crash.
When officers arrived on scene, they found a 2001 white Toyota Corolla against a tree with heavy front-end damage and both air bags deployed. The passenger of the vehicle, a 39-year- old male from Taunton, MA was outside of the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle, a 29-year- old female from Fall River, MA was unconscious and trapped inside of the vehicle. Both the operator and passenger were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Newport and Middletown Fire Departments responded to the scene and extricated the operator from the vehicle. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries to her legs and pelvic bone. She remains unconscious and in critical condition.
The passenger was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital for upper body injuries and is in stable condition.
This accident remains under investigation.
