Brockton – A man has been convicted by a jury of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at a Rockland hotel serving as a shelter for migrants, according to an announcement from Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.

Following a four-day proceeding in Plymouth Superior Court, jurors took 5 ½ hours to deliberate before convicting Cory B. Alvarez, now 27, on one count of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year age gap. Alvarez remains detained without bail pending his sentencing.

The incident unfolded around 7:06 p.m. on March 13, 2024, when Rockland Police responded to a sexual assault report at the Comfort Inn located at 850 Hingham Street. At that time, the facility was participating in a state and federal initiative to house and support migrant families, and Alvarez was a resident there.

Officers arrived to find the young victim, who was then taken to South Shore Hospital for medical care. The ensuing probe gave Rockland Police sufficient grounds to apprehend Alvarez.

During the trial, evidence presented included testimony about Alvarez’s DNA being discovered on the victim.

“We appreciate the jury’s commitment and thorough review in delivering a guilty verdict for Cory Alvarez,” stated DA Cruz. “This challenging matter has centered on pursuing accountability for the young victim. We’re relieved to have presented the case based on the facts, leading to the jury’s unified decision.”

Alvarez’s sentencing is set for September 30th at 2:00 p.m. in Plymouth Superior Court, with the offense mandating at least 10 years in state prison.

The prosecution was led by Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham, supported by Victim Witness Advocate Carolyn Dixon, with the investigation handled by Rockland Police.
