26-year-old Rhode Island man accused of stabbing two pet dogs, killing one

A Providence man has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of one dog, the stabbing of a second dog, and the alleged assault of a witness following a domestic dispute involving family members. 

According to Providence Police and the investigation, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 14th, when Providence Police officers responded to a residence on Carleton Street after receiving a reported animal complaint. Upon arrival, officers determined the incident involved a felony assault and the malicious injury to or killing of animals. 

The preliminary investigation revealed that an altercation occurred after two dogs became involved in a fight with two smaller dogs outside the residence. According to investigators, after the animals had been separated, a dispute escalated between two brothers. 

Investigators allege that 26-year-old Charles W. Deluca of Providence, entered his residence, retrieved a pocket knife, returned outside, and stabbed two dogs belonging to his brother. During the incident, a female witness reported fearing for her safety after the suspect allegedly swung the knife in her direction while attacking one of the dogs. 

Both injured dogs were transported to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. One dog, Brunis, sustained a puncture wound to the lung and, despite emergency veterinary care, succumbed to its injuries and was humanely euthanized. The second dog, Otis, sustained non-life-threatening stab wounds and was treated and released. 

Providence Police Detectives responded to the scene, interviewed witnesses, obtained veterinary records documenting the injuries, and continued the investigation. Later that evening, Deluca voluntarily responded to Providence Police Headquarters, where he was interviewed by detectives. Following the interview, he was placed under arrest without incident. 

As a result of the investigation, Deluca has been charged with one count of Felony Assault, two counts of Malicious Injury to or Killing of Animals, and one count of Domestic Disorderly Conduct.

Court records show that at arraignment, Deluca posted $10,000 surety/$1,000 cash bail and has a conference scheduled for September 14th.
