24-year-old man sentenced to jail after head-on highway crash in Norfolk County that seriously injured 2

A Weymouth man was sentenced to jail Tuesday on drunken driving charges related to a head-on motor vehicle crash in 2019 that seriously injured the driver of an SUV in Weymouth, Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey announced.

24-year-old James D. Batts was sentenced in Norfolk Superior Court to two years in jail, six months committed, and the balance suspended for two years with conditions of probation.

After a five-day jury trial, Batts found guilty Wednesday, Oct. 30 of driving negligently under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury.

Batts was driving a Jeep that crashed head on into the victim’s SUV shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2019, in the area of 1400 Main St. (Route 18) in Weymouth.

The driver of the SUV, a 58-year-old man, and his passenger, a 54-year-old woman, both of Abington, were taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment of their injuries, according to Morrissey.

Batts was ordered to have no contact with the victim and witness, submit to drug and alcohol testing and complete 50 hours of community service. He will lose his driver’s license for two years.

Restitution will be determined at a later date.

The crash was investigated by Weymouth police and the case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christopher H. Meade.
