20-year-old Rhode Island probation violator indicted after reported shooting and robbery at playground
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI -A Rhode Island man has been indicted concerning a shooting and robbery that allegedly took place late last year.
On Thursday, the Providence County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging 20-year-old Jose Hernandez of Pawtucket with one count of first-degree robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of carrying a pistol without a license, and one count of using a firearm while committing a crime of violence.
Hernandez is accused of a shooting and robbery of an East Providence man that occurred at the Hull Street playground on December 26, 2023.
Shortly after the shooting, Detective Stephen DeMedeiros and Detective Patrick Kelley were able to identify Hernandez as the person allegedly responsible for the shooting. The victim has since been released from the hospital.
Hernandez was previously presented as a Superior Court probation violator on two previous first-degree robbery charges.
East Providence Police Chief Christopher Francesconi said, “Senseless violence such as this, especially in one of our community parks, will not be tolerated. I would like to commend the members of our Detective Division for their excellent investigatory work which led to the quick identification of the suspect. I would also like to thank the U.S. Marshalls and members of Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force for their rapid arrest of Hernandez.”‘
Hernandez is scheduled to be arraigned on June 26, 2024, in Providence County Superior Court.

Police Chief Christopher Francensconi is a clown! Senseless violence will not be tolerated? BULLS*IT 2 previous first degree robbery charges says otherwise. No challenges to his claim , no one calling him and the D/As and judges out for allowing this to happen. Chances are if he would’ve never been released in the first place my guy wouldn’t have been shot.

Two previous first degree robbery convictions? WTF was he doing walking the streets? He should have been in prison. Nice job by EPPD for catching this felon but the courts and AG needs to stop cutting deals and lock these felons up.
