20-year-old pleads not guilty in Massachusetts double shooting that left one dead, another injured
A Massachusetts man has pleaded not guilty for his role in connection with a shooting that left one man dead and another injured, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
Donya Johnson, 20, of Brockton, was arraigned in Brockton District Court late Friday afternoon on one count each of Murder, Carrying a Firearm Without a License, Possession of a Firearm Without an FID Card, Discharge of a Firearm Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License. The charges are in connection with the fatal shooting of 25 year-old Nerilson Lopes.
Today’s arrest and arraignment follows the investigation into a double shooting at approximately 8:35 p.m. on June 7. Brockton Police responded to a report of a shooting in the area of 987 North Main Street in Brockton. Brockton Police and Fire responded and located a male victim, later identified as Lopes, in the parking lot at that address suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A second male shooting victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in a personal motor vehicle for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and an investigation commenced. As a result, probable cause was established to charge Johnson with Murder and a warrant for his arrest was issued Friday. At approximately 1 p.m., Johnson presented himself at the Brockton District Court and he was placed under arrest without incident.
Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment today and is next scheduled to appear in court on June 23.
The investigation is ongoing.
