19 students graduate from Fall River Police Department Teen Police Academy

The Fall River Police Department just wrapped up a summer Teen Police Academy providing plenty of experiences for attendees.

The academy took place at Durfee High School from July 24th to August 4th with 19 students graduating in a ceremony held at the school on Friday.

The objective is to provide two weeks of fitness, education and fun weaved into a police academy format. The curriculum included various presentations from guest law enforcement agencies, hands-on practice, and physical training to give students an idea of what it is involved in becoming a police officer, but also how to be a responsible citizen.

The mission of the Teen Police Academy is to foster a better understanding and relationship between young people and the Fall River Police Department. The program offers those interested in a law enforcement career an opportunity to engage in modified police training exercises and gain an understanding of the emotional, physical, and mental challenges police officers face daily in their community. Young people also gain the proper mindset and attitude needed to be successful in a law enforcement career or any career path they may choose by participating in group fitness events, challenges, and exercises.

The academy included a K9 demonstration, mock felony motor vehicle stops, and even a field trip to Gillette Stadium to learn about the security measures needed to ensure safety at large scale events. Time was also spent on the Harbormaster’s boat patrolling the Taunton River and learning about the challenges of enforcing the law on the water.

Although the whole group of participants were amazing, according to the instructors, several students were recognized for individual awards. Yesmeli Gomes – Boot Award, Tyrique Lewis – Heart & Hustle Award, Jason Chaves – Most Improved Award, Brayden Medeiros – Physical Fitness Award, Paige Laliberte – Leadership Award, and Chloe Baker – Golden Disc Award. Axis Bats donated the awards.
