17 local community groups urge Warren and Markey to sever Hodgson ties with ICE
A letter was signed last week by 17 community groups “to contact the Department of Homeland Security and request that I.C.E. sever all ties with Sheriff Thomas Hodgson.”
This appeal follows Attorney General Maura Healey’s finding that Sheriff Hodgson violated the rights of people held in a Dartmouth detention center in a violent altercation. Hodgson disputes Healey’s finding.
Prior to that incident, U.S. circuit Judge Thomas opined that Hodgson and ICE had acted in “reckless disregard” of the lives of those held in the ICE facility.
The letter was delivered to Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and the groups hope to meet with the Senators to push their case.
“The people of Bristol County have had enough with the Sheriff and his Wild West mentality. Law and order starts at the top and if we don’t hold our officials accountable, it builds mistrust among the Department of Correction and the local community,” said Marlene Pollock, an organizer with Bristol County for Correctional Justice.
