16-year-old Bristol County para-athlete continues to shatter her personal goals

Sixteen-year-old Mary MacDonald of Taunton marked a milestone in her athletic career by completing the prestigious 53rd ASICS Falmouth Road Race in a time of 54:36, placing 6th in the women’s wheelchair division. Surpassing her personal goal of finishing the race in under one hour, Mary was thrilled with her accomplishment.

“My goal was to cross the finish line in under 1:00:00, and coming in at 54:36 was beyond exciting — it showed me that with dedication and hard work, I can achieve what I set my mind to,” Mary shared.

According to her father, William Glass, MacDonald’s participation continues to build on the rich legacy of adaptive sports at Falmouth, a race known for inclusivity and pioneering spirit since Bob Hall first broke barriers in wheelchair racing here 50 years ago. “Hall’s pioneering efforts and innovations set the stage for athletes like Mary to compete at the highest level and inspire new generations to embrace the sport.”

Mary’s journey reflects not only athletic excellence but also the resilience and advocacy that define her character. “Every race is more than just a finish line — it’s a reminder that no matter the challenges, if you stay dedicated and believe in yourself, the possibilities are endless,” she added.

Reflecting on the course, Mary noted, “The final hill was one of the toughest parts of the race — it’s where you really have to push through the pain and keep going. Crossing the finish line after that climb made the whole effort worth it.”

A key inspiration for Mary comes from fellow adaptive athletes whom she deeply respects. She describes racing alongside Paralympic legend Tatyana McFadden — including competing in the Tommy Cochary High School Mile — as a profound honor, fueling her motivation to continue striving at the highest levels.

Beyond Falmouth and track, Mary is an active member of the Cape Cod Curling Club and has competed in multiple Tony Colacchio Wheelchair Spiels.

Mary is also a decorated para-athlete with multiple national titles in track, field, and para powerlifting. She balances her sporting ambitions with studies in Digital and Visual Communications at Bristol Plymouth Regional Technical High School and pursues her passion for arts and advocacy for disability inclusion.
