15 new veteran-preferred apartments denied in Fall River after neighbor complaints
A plan for more apartment units in Fall River was shot down last week.
At the Thursday Zoning Board of Appeals Meeting, developer Jaime Duff, represented by Atty. Peter Saulino, sought a Special Permit to convert a portion of the existing structure at 951 Slade Street and 1006 Dwelly Street into 15 residential units, as well as a Special Permit for relief from parking requirements.
The property, built in 1965, is located in an A-2 (Apartment) Zoning District.
The 14,000 square foot building is across the street from Chew Playground and near Cook Pond.
According to Duff, the studio apartments would have been all handicap accessible with veterans preferred.
Over 80 neighbors objected to the project stating increased traffic, noise, and congestion in addition to a decrease in available parking. One neighbor stated that he had concerns that veterans would be occupying the apartments believing that they would be trouble. The neighbors preferred a multifamily home on the property instead.
After the objections, the Board rejected the proposal.
Saulino stated earlier in the meeting that Duff would be able to build 9 apartments on the site by right. It is currently unclear if Duff plans on proceeding with that plan.
The proposal comes on the heels of over 850 units getting Zoning Board approval for variances and special permits in September.

Wow talk about knitpicking. There’s plenty of room for parking in the area and noise? They’re right behind a fire station with the trucks and ambulances going to-and-fro. People suck. Thank you for your service just stay out of my neighborhood

This sad,I’m a veteran who’s looking for my own place to live, but I can’t afford the rents everyone is asking. Right now I’m staying with family and my belongings are at my former place back in New Bedford which my once landlord is asking for me to get my stuff, well I can’t afford that either to put in storage. I’m in a rock and a hard place and no one wants to help me. Next time someone says “Thank you for your service”, I’ll tell them go f**k yourself. I’m tired of the B.S. we veterans get from Federal, State, and local governments. We need a revolution NOW!!

This is truly reprehensible! I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran and own my own home but I feel for all veterans who served this country should be afforded the opportunity to have a decent living quarters. As for the neighbor who said that the Veterans would be “trouble” should be thankful to Veterans that he is free to make such an outlandish statement because of Veterans! What a disgrace! I wish I had been aware of this meeting so I would certainly have made my disgust known!

Of course veterans affordable housing gets denied. Meanwhile variances for parking issues with other developments get rubber stamped. GFY to the clowns on the zoning board and neighbors who think veterans are a problem 🙄

Are the neighbors from this country? How dare you deny the men and women who defend the freedoms you have. But yet we prepare housing for illegal immigrants. I honestly do not understand people.
