A Fall River man faced a judge today in response to multiple charges stemming from a fatal car crash on Thursday.

According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn,  37 year old Irvin Dominguez-Cruz of Fall River has been ordered held without bail after being arraigned this afternoon for yesterday’s fatal hit and run in Fall River that claimed the life of 29-year-old Christopher P. Mills.

Irvin Dominguez-Cruz has been charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, motor vehicle homicide by means of negligent operation, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to yield to an oncoming vehicle.

Fall River Police received a 911 call Thursday morning around 6 a.m. regarding a crash involving a motorcycle and a box truck in the area of 2345 Highland Avenue. When first responders arrived, they located the severely injured driver of the motorcycle and rushed him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 7 a.m.

A preliminary accident reconstruction analysis indicates that the motorcycle was traveling north on Highland Avenue when the box truck, which was traveling south on Highland Avenue, began to turn onto Courtney Street. The motorcycle then attempted to stop, creating a 25 to 30 yard skid mark prior to striking the passenger side of the box truck. This information is only preliminary and a more extensive investigation into the crash is ongoing.

According to WPRI 12’s Kim Kalunian, police believe Dominguez-Cruz may be in the country illegally from Honduras. His defense attorney says he has a wife and children. Police say witnesses said Dominguez-Cruz didn’t signal or apply brakes before allegedly turning directly into the victim’s path. Mills was not able to stop in time to avoid collision.
