DARTMOUTH, MA – On Saturday, December 23, Dartmouth Police responded to three separate calls regarding car breaks in or around the North Dartmouth Mall.

During the course of investigation, Officers David Oikarinen and Adam Rego were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle as a black Mazda 626 bearing Rhode Island registration TI249.

A short time after the vehicle information was disseminated, Officer Keith DaCosta observed it traveling on North Hixville Road. Prior to being able to engage the vehicle, the operator sped off. While fleeing the area at a high rate of speed, the suspect struck a mailbox, before ultimately losing control and crashing into a large tree.

Subsequent to the crash, the male operator was identified as Marcellino D. Alves, 60, of 46 Lonsdale Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.

Due to his injuries as a result of the crash, Alves was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.

As a result of the incident, Alves was charged with operating after suspension of his license (6th offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speed greater than reasonable, marked lanes violation, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage.

The car breaks remain under investigation by the Dartmouth Police Department Investigative Services Division.
